Maitri House Northwest offers educational coaching and tutoring for individual students and group facilitation for all learners seeking extra support identifying steps and setting goals for success in high school, college, university and beyond. We begin by cultivating a sense of students’ curiosity for their wellbeing and identifying their personal and academic strengths and interests in how they want to engage with life and in their communities.

Susi Steinmann, Ph.D., is the lead education consultant whose goal it is to support student learning in order to foster resilient and compassionate people who can and want to engage positively in their families and communities locally and globally. Uniquely, Dr. Steinmann’s education and consulting services utilize ecological concepts such as adaptation, resilience, energy flows and restoration to guide students toward reflection and awareness of their inner resources in order to explore and sustain engagement with their learning and with life now and into the future.

In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, many young adults need mentoring and trusted adult support so they can honestly share how they are really doing emotionally and psychologically. This inner baseline significantly affects students’ academic ability and success. High schools and universities have encountered returning students and staff who are struggling with social, emotional, economic and familial stresses as a result of lockdowns during the Pandemic, rapidly changing social media technologies, ‘virtual’ communities, climate change and other environmental and conflict disruptions. We look forward to supporting the whole person, as an individual or in learning communities seeking renewed hope, energy and resilience for the future.

Maitri House offers two service areas:

(1) Individual and group coaching for academic success and social-emotional wellness in students navigating their educational journeys through high school, university and independent, purposeful lives thereafter.

(2) Professional consulting and workshops/trainings for teachers, administrators and youth leaders in all educational, international NGO and non-profit settings, and for social workers who support students’ academic and life journeys.

Our Philosophy

“Creating a village where each person knows their worth and their welcome”- Francis Weller.

An ecological framework informs the Maitri House Northwest educational curriculum and consulting philosophy. Visible, externally, in nature is the great cycle of life: birth, growth, struggle, depletion, hibernation, and transformation. Internally, humans face emotional challenges, confusion and sometimes, exhaustion. If these challenges are acknowledged and supported, they too can produce great personal growth and renewed energy. Ecological systems and human beings are adaptive and resilient when healthy and nurtured.

Our practices honor compassion, inclusion, equity and value diverse learning approaches. Maitri House Northwests’ lessons and programs are trauma informed and designed to nurture confident individuals within their family and cultural systems. And, educational methodologies are grounded in Paulo Freire’s Popular Education, where learning is participant-centered, people-led, and collective. All participants bring value and knowledge into the learning from their own experiences. We encourage participants to develop strength-based capacities and trust across cultural, racial and socio-economic groups. (see services and testimonials).
